The Second Vatican Council and the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima are two of the most most significant events in the Church during the 20th century. Both events help to bring holiness closer to the people and remind us of the universal call to holiness. During the summer months, we will look at the story of Fatima.
The children who saw Our Lady in 1917 were Lucia Santos, Jacinta Marto and Francisco Marto. In 1916, the Angel of Peace appeared to the children three times and prepared them for the apparitions of Our Lady the following year.
Prayer of reparation
In the spring of 1916, an angel appeared to the children, saying, “Do not be afraid. I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me.” The angel then prostrated himself and prayed three times: “O my God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee.” The children prostrated themselves and repeated the prayer.
The angel rose from the ground and said, “Pray thus. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications.” Then he disappeared.
Lesson on sacrifice
One afternoon in the summer of 1916, the children spent time in the shade of the fig trees surrounded a well. Suddenly, they saw the angel stood beside them.
The angel said, “What are you doing? Pray! Pray very much! The Hearts of Jesus and Mary have designs of mercy on you. Offer prayers and sacrifices constantly to the Most High.”
Lucia asked, “How are we to make sacrifices?” The angel said, “Make of everything you can a sacrifice, and offer it to God as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for the conversion of sinners. You will thus draw down peace upon your country.”
“I am its Angel Guardian, the Angel of Portugal. Above all accept and bear with submission, the suffering which the Lord will send you.”
Communion of reparation
One day in the fall of 1916, the children were on their way, praying the Rosary and the prayer taught by the angel. The angel appeared for the third time, holding a chalice with a Host above it.
Leaving the Host and the chalice suspended in the air, the angel prostrated himself and prayed three times: “Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore Thee profoundly. I offer Thee the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences whereby He is offended. And through the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners.”
The angel then raised and took the chalice and the Host. He gave the Host to Lucia and the Precious Blood from the chalice to Francisco and Jacinta. The angel said, “Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Repair their crimes and console your God.”
Once more, the angel prostrated himself and repeated with the children three times the same prayer :Most Holy Trinity…” and then disappeared.
According to Lucia, the apparitions of the angel and the apparitions of Our Lady produced different effects. After the apparitions of the angel, the children experienced physical exhaustion, a sense of annihilation in the Divine Presence, and the desire to keep silence. However, the apparitions of Our Lady brought about an expansive ease of movement, a joyful exultation, and a certain communicative enthusiasm.
