On July 13, 1917 Our Lady gave the three parts secret to the three children of Fatima. Years later the secret was revealed to all. The first part was the horrible vision of hell, the second part was the establishment of devotion to the Immaculate Heart for the salvation of souls, and the third part was about the many martyrs for the faith in the 20th century and the Pope being shot.
The Administrator of Ourem was an ambitious man and imagined that the secret might be about him. The Administrator summoned the children and tried to force them to reveal the secret. When he could get nothing from them, he pretended to be converted and would take the children to the Cova da Iria for the apparition of Our Lady on August 13. Instead he kidnapped the children and took them to Ourem. The Administrator placed the children in jail with men prisoners and threatened to throw them into boiling oil if they did not reveal the secret.
In prison, Jacinta was very upset. With tears streaming down her face, she said, “Neither your parents nor mine come to see you. They don’t care about us anymore.” Francisco said, “Don’t cry, let us offer this to Jesus for sinners.” And raising his eyes, he prayed, “My Jesus, this is for the love of you and for the conversion of sinners.” Jacinta added, “And for the Holy Father too, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.”
The children decided to pray the rosary. Jacinta took a chain with a medal from around her neck and asked a prisoner to hang it on a nail in the wall. The children then knelt before the medal and recited the rosary.
To comfort the children, the prisoners started to play and sing. A prisoner lifted Jacinta up in his arms and danced.
Though the children were eventually released, they missed the apparition of August 13. A crowd of people gathered at the holm-oak tree in the Cova da Iria on August 13. At noon, they saw mysterious signs such as a pillar of blue cloud over the holm-oak appearing and disappearing three times.
August and September
After the children were released from prison, Our Lady appeared to them on August 19 at a place called Valinhos. In that apparition, Our Lady asked the children to go to the Cova da Iria on the 13th, and to continue saying the rosary. Our Lady promised that she would perform a miracle in October so that all may believe.
With a sad expression, Our Lady said, “Pray, pray very much and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls go to hell because they have nobody to pray and make sacrifices for them.”
Remember the message of Our Lady and the vision of hell, the children started making many sacrifices. They gave their lunches to poor children, abstained from water on hot summar days, wore rough cords around their waists which cut into them, and bowed their heads to the ground reciting the prayers taught by the angel in 1916.
On September 13, Our Lady appeared to the children in the Cova da Iria. She said, “Continue to say the rosary in order to obtain the end of the war. In October, Our Lord will come, and also Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Carmel. St. Joseph will appear with the Child Jesus to bless the world. God is pleased with your sacrifices, but he does not want you to sleep with the cord on, only to wear it during the daytime.”
